The ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich (ifo), a non-profit organisation founded in January 1949, is one of the leading economic research institutes in Europe and one of the most frequently cited in the media. It conducts applied economic research with clear policy implications, intensively trains junior researchers and provides services to research and the general public.
These tasks are carried out by the eight ifo centres for Labour and Demographic Economics, for the Economics of Education, for Public Finance and Political Economy, for International Economics, for Energy, Climate and Exhaustible Resources, for Business Cycle Analysis and Surveys, for Industrial Organisation and New Technologies as well as for International Institutional Comparisons and Migration Research and by the Dresden branch and the Research Group on Tax and Fiscal Policy.
The CESifo GmbH subsidiary, founded by ifo together with the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, is responsible for the CESifo Research Network, which comprises more than 1300 economists from all over the world.
