13 November 2024 | Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU
This year’s EconPol Annual Conference will revolve around the question on how the incoming EU legislature can safeguard and strengthen European competitiveness and prosperity in the new reality of heightened geopolitical risks and trade tensions. How to balance conflicting priorities such as decarbonizing the economy, strengthening competitiveness, and enhancing security? This calls for innovative policy solutions and ideas.

The conference will focus the discussion on Europe’s economic competitiveness in three high-level panel discussions on Empowering the EU Single Market, EU Innovation Policy, and European Defense Policy. Panelists include Daniel Gros, Marco Buti, Angelika Niebler, Guntram Wolff, and Jan Pie, among others.

The keynote speech will be delivered by Kerstin Jorna, Director-General, DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs of the European Commission. To register, please visit our Conference Website.

Climate Change Adaptation: Too warm to Stay Cool

We are not bringing greenhouse gas emissions down fast enough to keep global temperatures from reaching dangerous levels. That is why Clemens Fuest and Maria Waldinger argue, that we need to invest in climate adaptation alongside climate mitigation. Focusing on measures, such as flood protection or cooling systems, is vital to protect the world’s most vulnerable populations from the most devastating effects of global warming.

What Reforms Does Germany Need to Return to Growth?

What economic policy does Germany need to overcome stagnation and return to growth and economic vitality? In the new EconPol report, Clemens Fuest, President of the ifo Institute, addresses this question by discussing eight specific policy reforms.
 POLICY BRIEF

Is Insufficient Supervisory Board Competence a Risk Factor for Banks?

The downfall of Credit Suisse should serve as a lesson that supervisory board competence determines the long-term risk of a bank. In Germany, this idea is also enshrined in law. But this study of German banks shows, there is still a long way to go.

European Banking after the 2023 Crisis

Institutions Across the World
The banking turmoil of 2023 had only a limited impact on banks in the Eurozone and the EU. Nevertheless, important lessons can be learned from this crisis: effective regulation and supervision is a moving target that must adapt to changing circumstances and banks’ business models.

The Impact of Working from Home on the German Office Real Estate Market

Big Data-Based Economic Insights
A quarter of employees in Germany regularly work from home (WFH), which is often a mixture of office and remote working. The office market in this country is undergoing a stress test and the steady shift to WFH will significantly reduce demand for office space in the long term.
